FHCSC Minutes of February 20, 2008

This month's meeting was held at the Sizzler Restaurant in Norco. President Lora Martin began the meeting at 7:30 PM with the introductions of old and new members. New member Jennifer O'Gara was welcomed and congratulated on the acquisition of her new Friesian filly. After the introductions were complete, Secretary Carole Nolten read the minutes from the January, 2008, meeting which were approved and seconded. Sheri Sheldon-Rusk reported on the financial status of the Club. Our old balance was $1779.67. After paying the expenses from the Christmas party, our new total is $1575.07. FHANA still owes the Club approximately $300 for hotel costs for the judges. Sheri needs to contact FHANA and request an expense report from them.

Production of a Club calendar as a means of raising funds was discussed. Krysti Agosta had originally expressed an interest in doing this. A motion was made to contact her to see if there was still the interest since we have another member who would like to get involved. Carole spoke with Krysti following the meeting. Krysti has had many changes in her situation making it difficult to be involved with the calendar project. She supported having another club member take it over. The decision made at this meeting was to have a timeline for completing the calendar. A copy of what we will be producing should be presented at the March meeting for approval and by the April meeting, the calendar should be ready for the members to review. Sheri will contact Sarah Elmassian who would like to take on this project.

Members were reminded that the AGM of FHANA was being held in Kentucky Feb. 21-23. The 21st was a retreat for the FHANA board. On Friday, there was the public meeting but the audience could not participate. Saturday's meeting was open for public participation. Congratulations were expressed to the new FHANA board members, Scott Kelnhofer and Arlene De Boer.

A point was made that there is a new facility in Hanford to test stallions for approval. February 27 & 28 were the dates for this year's testing.

Report on the Stalloin Testing Results in the Netherlands indicated that it was an "awesome experience, lots of fun and a great show!!" Champion was Haitse with Beart earning the title of Reserve Champion.

Members were also encouraged to think about participating with their horse(s) in upcoming horse shows which include the Andalusian Show (April), Del Mar Horse Show in June and August, Ventura and Pomona Fairs, and the Monterey Spring Fest and the Carousel Charity Horse show, both of which have Friesian classes. Check the Club website for posting of the dates and events. On April 12/13 there is the Spring breed classic in Los Angeles. The Pleasure Days Carriage/Driving Show will be held on May 31st and June 1st.

Appreciation was expressed to all members who participated at the Equine Affair volunteering at the FHANA booth and/or putting on an exhibition. We had good representation for the breed.

In order to provide an opportunity for club members to show their horses without strong competition as well as providing experience in performing in classes, a proposal was made to schedule a Play Day/Show in June/July. It would be open to beginners as well as experienced riders. Events would be in an arena and include judges and awarding of ribbons. There would be approximately 10 classes. Redlands was mentioned as a great location. There would be a charge of $12-$15 for each class. Another possibility would be to have a 2-day event; one day showing followed by a BBQ and the other day a trail ride followed by a BBQ. Nothing definite was decided.

Our speaker for tonight, Paula, who owns a costume shop, was unable to make the meeting. In a discussion about rescheduling the event, there was an idea presented of having members model the costumes at the rescheduled meeting. Hopefully, we can have her in May. Carole was asked to contact Marcia about rescheduling.

Topics for future clinics were suggested. Club members who volunteered to be contacts for each of the specific clinics included Sheri Sheldon-Rusk for Saddle Fitting, Cassandra Reed for Equine Massage, and Jennifer O'Gara for Dental Clinic. The schedule currently includes Brian Borg, dental, for March, Amber Knight, equine specialist from Purina Mills for April, Paula the costume-maker for May, and possibly for June, appropriate riding attire and riding etiquette presented by Sonja.

There was great interest in having another Beach Day in July/August. If there is an interest in an overnight event, we need to consider accommodations when planning where to go.

Members with pictures of this year's events were encouraged to send them to Sarah to post on the web (royalfriesian@yahoo.com).

Jan Grant invited interested members to participate in the Tack Sale she planned at her ranch this coming weekend. Only requirement was to bring your own table and change.

Old/new business brought to the membership included introducing a new photographer, Ronnie Smith. She is willing to come to your house and is very interested in doing events. Carol Nieblas shared information she acquired at the Equine Affair. One brochure presented clothing that you wear in a parade to keep you cool. She also talked about Colic Cleanse which is given to horses that tend to colic. She mentioned that we may want to have someone come to speak to the club about this too.

The meeting concluded with our traditional raffle. Our next meeting is scheduled for March 19 at the Sizzler in Norco.
