Minutes
Minutes of the previous meeting were not presented as Carol was on vacation at the time of that meeting and a substitute for taking minutes was not identified. President Lora Martin was absent due to unforeseen circumstances, therefore, Sheri Rusk, Vice President conducted the meeting.
Future Presentations
While waiting for board members to arrive Carol Nieblas asked the group for ideas for future guest speakers. Lisa Lerch a member and legal equestrian had offered to speak to the group if they were interested and the group indicated they were very interested.. The group also expressed interest in having Dr. Swyers address the group once again and another veterinarian to discuss the when, what, and where of vaccinations and worming. (Lisa has been scheduled for the next meeting 6/16/10 but other speakers will probably be scheduled for after the Keuring).
Ventura County Fair - Friesian Day
The group discussed participation at the Ventura County Fair for Friesian Day. Nina Miller said she would coordinate if someone would let her know what to do and Marsha and Carol said they would help her. It is unclear at this time how much of a role we are needing to play other than participating in the event. (at a later board meeting Lora indicated she will try and get clarification from the Fair. So this is put on hold for right now BUT we hope whatever role we are playing that members will want to participate with their horses.)
3rd Annual Friesian Amateur Horse Show
There was lengthy discussion and planning for the amateur horse show being held in Redlands on Saturday June 12th. Cassandra passed around a copy of the ad placed in the Horsemen’s News and Carol had already posted the event on the FHANA website under the events calendar. We need a photographer (Lora later contacted someone we had used previously). The papers were filed for the drug testing and there will be a drug testing fee. There was a discussion concerning adding a class for novice or junior horse (an email was sent out prior to the event saying there would be a change in the open walk, trot, canter class to a country pleasure class, where the rider chooses to show at their favorite gait). Marsha’s suggestion to order ribbons that could be used the following year if for some reason they were not handed out was endorsed by the group. Sponsors are needed for classes at $25 per class (later an email was sent out saying anyone sponsoring a class and giving an item for the raffle could have a free venders table for items at the event. Lunch is being provided for those interested for $10. The group discussed if the price might be a little lower or offer a child’s plate or be able to order tacos ala carte. We will look into if we need a servers certificate.
Commitments included:
- Marcia saying she would research restaurants in the area (subsequently Romano’s Macaroni and Grill was selected at 27490 Lugonia Ave. Redlands, Ca 92374 {909} 798-4142)
- Ally indicated she would put flyer up in the businesses on 6th Street if we email her the ad
- Ally said she would do a write up for the FHANA magazine after the show.
- Carrie will put event on face book.
- Marcia stated she would put up flyer at Sundance Ranch if we email her the ad.
- Sheri indicated she would post at Broken Horn.
Information on “B Book”
Nina Miller was kind enough to update the group on some information concerning the discontinuation of the “B Book”. She gave us an explanation of the Books. B Book 1 was created when there was not enough stallions to maintain the breed and this book indicated Ster Stallions could be bred under certain circumstances. B Book 2 were products of purebred Friesians but Stallions not approved under any process. These books were taken out of use in the early 90’s and put back in the 2000’s and taken out of use again last year (2009). There has been discussion surrounding this latest action and FHANA is considering presenting the issue to FHANA members for a vote some time in the future. Pros and Cons of the B Book were discussed. Pro’s were: The B Book really doesn’t represent competition for FHANA horses and some people feel FHANA should not turn others away as it is better to know what is out there. Points against the B Books were basically some people feel they are a threat to the improvement of the breed and to the use of FHANA stallions. (I hope I got this correct if not come to the next meeting and maybe Nina will correct the minutes for us) Thank you so much Nina Miller (owner of approved stallion Wander 352) for explaining the issue to us so that we do understand more than we did before.
