2008 Keuring News and Information

October 1st and 2nd, 2008

Registration of Foals

Beginning 2007 there will be NO DNA sampling/microchipping of foals at the keuring sites. This means you must get your Birth Certificate in to FHANA as soon as possible after the birth, and then the DNA sampling/microchipping kit will be returned to you for your vet to administer, and then the paperwork is sent back to FHANA, which will forward this to KFPS, which will return it to FHANA which will then return it to you. Please understand, this will take TIME to be completed, and there undoubtedly will be delays. We thank you for your patience!

Procedures of KFPS inspection in North America 2007

by Ids Hellinga

With this notice, FHANA informs it's members regarding the changes in procedures of 2007 inspections. The changes include:

1 Assignment of Model mares

2 Assignment of stallions for Central Proving

3 World Friesian Horse show

4 Appeal

5 New designations

Assignment of (provisional) Model mares

At the US-inspections there is a class for star mares to obtain a premie and a class to apply for (provisional) Model. For 2007 there will be still 2 classes, however members can only apply for the class 'star mares for a premie'. The judges will invite the best mares out of the group of star mares who just received a 1st premie, for the class for (provisional) model. To become (provisional) model a mare should have received a 1st premie first, in the same year.

We understand there is some confusion about the status of 1st premie mares. Mares who have received a 1st premie in previous years can receive a 2nd premie later. But since all judging results are printed on the paper, the previously received 1st premie(s) remain visible on the paper.

To become model, a provisional model mare has to do an IBOP-test (within a year) with a result of at least 77 points and in average a 7 for walk and trot. There is some misunderstanding in the US an d Canada, that IBOP-tests are only open for provisional model mares. This is not correct. IBOP tests are open for stallions, geldings and mares. A good result increases the value of a horse. Moreover, in case a horse has good IBOP results, this is positively considered by the judges at the inspections when judging the movements. IBOP tests can also be done prior to the keuring for model. If a horse already meets the IBOP criteria, this horse will skip the provisional status.

Assignment of stallions for Central Proving

For stallions there are two classes: Foalbook (VB) stallions to obtain the star designation and stallions to be judged for Central Proving. Members can only apply stallions who are already star for this class. From the class of foalbook stallions for star, the best stallions are invited by the judges for the class. The advantage of this procedure is that this saves costs for the owners. The fee for the class stallions for Central Proving is rather high, since the judges have to evaluate the pedigree for this group of stallions. The judging of stallions for Central Proving will be both at halter and in free moving. After the presentation it will be announced whether a stallion has become star.

To qualify for Central Proving a stallion has to meet the criteria for semen quality and X-rays. Central Proving for stallions selected at the North American inspections will be set up at a test location in California.

World Friesian Horse Show

The World Friesian Horse Show, that will be held on October 25 - 27, 2007 in Ohio, will be the North American equivalent of the Dutch Central Keuring. The difference is that only the mares and geldings are able to participate that received a 1st premie in 2007, but also mares and geldings who received a 1st premie in previous years. During the World Friesian Horse Show Mares for Model do not receive premies, they are only ordered in their class. Further the best horses in each category are named champion.

Appeal

The World Friesian Horse Show, gives members an opportunity to do a repeat judging for horses that have been judged in 2007 already. In case an owner is unhappy how the horse presented it self or in case the owner is unhappy with the judging result, the owner can appeal. This has to be done in writing to the FHANA office, within a week after the first keuring. With an appeal the result of the first inspection will become void. It is possible that with an appeal, horses are lowered.

New designations

The emphasis on sport in both breeding goal and breeding program is increasing. As a result two new designations have been introduced:

1 Sport

2 Kroon

The Sport designation is based on results in sport. When horses (mares, geldings and stallions) have reached a certain level in sport, they can obtain the sport designation. KFPS is currently working on setting the North American equivalents of the Dutch standards. Only results from official USEF competitions are valid. The sport designation is added to the conformation designation, f.i. stamboek sport; stamboek ster sport; stamboek model sport; stamboek ster sport preferent; etc. etc.

The Kroon (Crown) designation comes in between star and model and is based on a combination between conformation and sportability. The procedures for kroon are similar to model. Mares who receive a first premie will be invited for a class for crown. Similar to Model a provisional kroon mare must do a test with at least 77 points to become kroon. The differences between kroon and model are:

1 the majority of the first premie mares will become (provisional) kroon.

2 There is no age limit for star mares to become kroon

3 There is no restriction for having had a foal for the kroon designation.

The introduction of the kroon designation is impacting the model designation. First there is decided that mares can only get model when they are at least 7 years old. Secondly, in the future, model mares will be selected from the class kroon mares. At the inspections there will a class of kroon mares for a premie. The best mares will be invited for the class for model. Since kroon mares already have met the IBOB standard, there will be no provisional models anymore. Of course, star mares that are 7 years old and have had a foal can get (provisional) model in one time, skipping the kroonpredikaat, if they meet the criteria for model. The kroon designation is effected in/from 2008.
