FHCSC Minutes of April 16, 2008
Meeting was held at the Sizzler Restaurant in Norco. Seventeen members were present. President Lora Martin began the meeting at 7:10 PM. Board members Sheri Sheldon-rusk and Erin DiLeo were not in attendance. Treasurer's report was unavailable as were minutes from March 19 meeting. Also unavailable was information about whether a copy of proposed calendar to be used for fund raising was ready for club review. Sheri was going to contact Sarah Elmasssian after the February meeting about this. (Calendar deadline was set to give the previous volunteer a deadline to work towards. This deadline was discussed bewteen Lora, Sheri, and Sarah, and all were assured that the deadline was not now a considerationfor the production of a sample - Sarah - February Minutes).
Proposed beach day will be discussed at the May meeting and a date selected then.
Marcia Goodwin reported on the Burbank Andalusian show. In her opinion it was worth attending. She felt that the judging went well. The people there were very friendly. It was one of the nicest places she has been, and in addition, there were many friesian horses there too. The next andalusian show will be in Del Mar.
The June 28th show was discussed. The entry form will be available soon. We have a photographer. The Horse Trader will advertise free; we need to have someone send in the information.
After this brief attention to Club business, Amber Knight, our featured speaker was introduced. Her focus was on broodmares and foals. She stated that the management of broodmares begins with good nutrition. In the early pregnancy stage vitamins and mineral reserves should be kept high. Roughage and grain consumption are important during all phases of development, as well as maintaining good body condition. The last 90 days are critical; high calories are needed. After foaling, the mare needs twice as much nutrients as before foaling; keeping up the vitamins and protein are critical. A foal's growth should be slow and steady. There is a need to provide exercise and control its weight by feeding a balanced diet. There was a question about how much to supplement a nursing foal. Amber suggested giving one pound of balanced grain-feed per month of age. If the foal starts getting too big, it is time to wean it. Something important to note is that the mare's milk is very low in minerals. Using loose minerals instead of block salt is more effective in increasing their supply. She concluded her interesting and informative talk by stating that equine growth weight should be slow and steady. Avoid extremes. It is all about balancing protein and minerals for bone development.
The evening concluded with a great question and answer session.
The next meeting will be May 21. Our speaker that evening will show us costumes she has created. It should be a GREAT time. See you then.
